Free surgeries for children with heart disorders

As many as 42 children have been operated in the last six weeks for congenial heart disorders under ‘Little Hearts Programme’, a joint initiative of Fortis Foundation and Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation.

The actor formally launched the charity programme on Wednesday at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI) in Gurgaon.

“We have already sponsored the treatment of 42 children and eight others are presently admitted at FMRI. This is a very small number. We have a long way to go as there are thousands of children suffering from this disorder in India. Our target is 500,” said the 48-year-old actor.

The foundation has been working towards making health and education accessible to underprivileged children.

According to Shivinder Mohan Singh, managing director of Fortis Health Care, one third of India’s children are victims to this disorder.

“We are trying to reach out to all those who don’t have access to healthcare,” he said.

Salman also launched a merchandise store of Being Human at the hospital.

Besides, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, which launched partial services in January this year, was opened fully on Wednesday. The even that also saw the presence of External Affairs Minister Salman Kurshid.

“The health sector is a social sector. There is supply and infrastructure, but there is not enough money. Therefore, our foundation will help address a lot of cases on charity basis,” said Malvinder Mohan Singh, chairperson, Fortis Group.
