The Millennium City is soon to have a separate body, on the pattern of Delhi Jal Board, which will streamline the water supply system.
According to officials, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) is planning to hold a meeting with experts on discuss the formation of a water management authority. A dedicated body will look after the supply of potable water to cater to the daily needs of about 15 lakh population and commercial units set up by multi-national firms.
“I am holding a meeting with experts and Gurgaon officials to discuss the issue on March 19. There are several agencies currently in Gurgaon distributing water, besides Huda. That should be regulated and one independent body will take care of the water distribution in the city,” said PK Chaudhary, Haryana chief secretary.
Unlike DJB, the Huda, which is an autonomous body floated by the state government in 1975 to develop urban and commercial areas, also manages water distribution system. Besides, other agencies such as HSIIDC, MCG, and Public Health Department also distribute water in Gurgaon.
“Haryana government feels the need is apt to consult experts to discuss technical aspects and then formulate the body,” said Chaudhary, who visited Gurgaon last September.
At local level, Huda administrator Praveen Kumar is likely to hold a meeting with experts. “An independent board like DJB will manage water supply system in the city properly,” the chief secretary said.
“Only Gurgaon’s population, as per 2011 census, stands around nearly 15.14 lakh and total water supply is 45 MGD. The population growth in Gurgaon has recently been recorded at the rate of 1.5 lakh a year, and therefore the increase in demand for the resources is expected at the rate of 3 to 5 mgd per year,” said RS Rathee, president of Gurgaon Citizen Council, a residents’ body.
