Not many facilities, pedestrians fall victim to road accidents

Agencies have not paid heed to requests for adequate facilities to cross the highway such as subways or pedestrian bridges.
Besides, the state government and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) are at loggerheads on the issue of sharing revenue for additional underpasses and subways for pedestrian on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
The 17-km expressway stretch between Delhi border and Kherki Daula toll plaza reported 27 accident deaths and 15 of these were pedestrians.
Hero Honda Chowk to Kherki Daula toll turned out to be the most dangerous stretch for pedestrians. Out of the 11 deaths that took place here, eight were those of pedestrians.
The road from IMT Manesar-Kapriwas (beyond Kherki Dual toll Plaza) reported 26 accident deaths out of which 8 were pedestrians.
Even the data provided by the city traffic police confirmed that many pedestrians have simply lost their lives while crossing roads. Police further said that hundreds of lives could have been saved if basic facilities, such as foot over bridges (FOBs), subways were put in place over the years.
As per the traffic police department records of 2011, 411 people were killed on city roads. Many could have been saved had there been basic facilities like traffic signals, pedestrian crossovers and others.
To cater to the swelling traffic volume, the city requires 23 subways, 20 flyovers, 17 parking lots and AIIMS-style interchanges for smooth flow.
Shortage of traffic police personnel also adds to the chaos.
There are only 425 policemen in the city to man busy intersections.
