Two men robbed of Rs 29,000 after being offered a lift in Gurugram

Three unidentified men in an SUV allegedly stole Rs 29,000 from two commuters near Iffco Chowk after offering them a lift to Faridabad, on Thursday morning.

According to the police, the incident took place around 6 am when Mahendra Kumar (55) of Faridabad and Prakash Chandra (35) of Rajsamand, Rajasthan, were waiting at Iffco Chowk for transport to Faridabad.

“The victims got down from a Rajasthan Roadways bus coming from Udaipur and wanted to reach Faridabad. Three men in a white Safari car stopped at the junction and offered them a lift to Faridabad,” said assistant sub-inspector Prem Chand, the investigating officer.

Chand said the victims told the police that soon after they got into the car, one of the accused,who was seated at the back, started manhandling them and asked them to hand over their wallets. “One of the victims even claimed that an accused snatched cash from him by trying to smother him,” Chand added.

The police said that the accused stole Rs 24,000 from Kumar and Rs 5,000 from Chandra. They dropped the victims at a U-turn near Signature Towers in Sector 30 and fled.

“The accused also removed the phone battery from the mobile phone of one of the victims, in order to prevent them from calling the police. The SUV did not have a registration number plate,” said the officer.

The police said the victims reported the matter to the control room. A case against unidentified persons under sections 379 A (snatching) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Sector 17 police station.

Commuters in Gurugram often become a target of such gangs of robbers. On June 27, two men in a cab allegedly abducted a private firm employee from Iffco Chowk on the pretext of offering him a lift. The accused held him at gunpoint and asked him to make a ransom call to his home. The accused also snatched his mobile phone, company ID card, and a pen drive.
