Dr Sarraf was delivering a lecture on ‘Low Backache’ during a Continuing Medical Education (CME) at the Indian Medical Association in Lahurabeer here this afternoon. The programme was jointly organised by College of General Physicians and IMA.

Dr. Sarraf said that the occurrence rate of backache was cent per cent. “Every person suffers backache once or more than once in his life time”, he said. The causes of backache varied from age to age, he said. “It occurs due to wrong sitting postures among kids whereas backache is reported in younger people due to sciatica injury”, he said, adding that cancer, weakening of bones and joints and age-related problems were the main factors responsible for backache among elderly people.

Prof. Sarraf said that in most backache cases, the causes were not very serious and this backache was preventable if the people followed instructions and advice. He said that one should always sleep on a hard surface and the mattress should also be firm. “People who have jobs requiring sitting for long hours should sit on a chair which can support the lower back”, he said.

Prof. Sarraf suggested that one should avoid being overweight, must do regular exercise and control diet. “Taking care of osteoporosis by regular intake of calcium is advisable for women and elderly populace”, he said.
