Developing cracks on the nipples is a common complaint during hot and humid climate. Underlying pathology needs to be ruled out.

Both men and women have nipples. They are redundant in men. The female nipples are sites of meeting of the areolar glands. It is also the site of milk ejection from the mother. The baby suckles milk from the breasts via the nipples.

Developing cracks on the nipples is a common complaint during hot and humid climate. Underlying pathology needs to be ruled out. Cracks may lead to over-infection and discharge. Suppuration may occur. During suckling, if the baby handles the nipples firmly, chances of cracking increases.

Wearing loose undergarments and keeping the area dry will definitely help. Washing the breasts with warm water and cleaning under the surface is a must. Use of skin ointment under the guidance of a doctor will help.
