Rentrak has announced that the fifth installment of the Die Hard action saga drew in $86.5M throughout the world during its first weekend of release.
A Good Day to Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, was the saga's second-best opening in North America with takings of $25M. Audiences in other countries were also keen to see John McClaine's new adventures, helping the film earn $61.5M in more than 63 countries.
This is the best opening weekend the series has had internationally.
The romantic drama Safe Heaven starring Josh Duhamel came in second. The movie, which was released in seven countries, earned $24.03M. Identity Thief fell from the top spot to third place with earnings of $23.62M. The comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman has made a total of $71.42M.
