The internet has offered its five best theories about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest Avengers, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.Updated: Sep 06, 2018 17:53 IST
Now that the world has got its first glimpse of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, thanks to the elaborate Entertainment Weekly spread from Wednesday, fans are theorising as to how the superhero could factor into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Most of these theories originate from Reddit. One user, Elementlegen, believes that the film will tell the story of how Nick Fury lost his eye. He is basing this on a cryptic line spoken by Fury in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye,” he says in the film.
Redditor mcu_infinitum believes that Captain Marvel will be the one to vanquish Thanos, by using the Infinity Gauntlet on him, because she’s the only Avenger powerful enough to do so.
Multiple Redditors have theorised that Doctor Strange, when he analysed 14 million possible outcomes for how the Avengers’ fight with Thanos could end, he also visited the past - specifically the time when Captain Marvel is set. It has also been rumoured that either Doctor Strange or the Ancient One went back into the past and told Fury exactly when to summon Carol Danvers.
Redditor rlhuguenin, among several others, believes Captain Marvel will take over as the leader of the Avengers if and when Captain America dies/retires. “Captain Marvel will be the new leader of the Avengers. She’ll take on the role that cap had.”
Agent Coulson has already alluded to Captain Marvel in the first Iron Man movie. “He’s a lot younger. This is maybe the rodeo he’s talking about,” Clark Gregg, the actor who plays Coulson, told Entertainment Weekly. He was referring to a line his character says in the first Iron Man film: “This isn’t my first rodeo.” Coulson will return in Captain Marvel after dying in the first Avengers film.
Talking about the film, Marvel chief Kevin Feige had previously explained why the studio was tapping into the ‘90s action genre. “The answer is, you’ll see in the storytelling of the movie,” Feige had told the Toronto Sun. “But it allows us to play in an area that we have never played in before and tapping into a ’90s action genre was fun for us and being able to see an earlier part of the MCU before Nick Fury knew anything about aliens or anything about super-powered people and also tapping into the Kree-Skrull War, which in the comics was a huge part of the comic mythology, seemed like a fun thing to try and a fun way to give Carol Danvers her own stand-alone origin story.”
He said that Captain Marvel was, “The most powerful superhero that we’ve ever introduced with, I think, one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories,”
Samuel L Jackson teased Captain Marvel’s massive potential in an interview to Vulture. “Who’s really dead, and who’s really in the flaky wind of Marvel dust, I don’t know, but I do know there’s a solution that they didn’t even have to tell me, just because I know who Captain Marvel is and what all that means,” Jackson had said. At the end of Infinity War, Jackson’s Nick Fury, who plays a supporting role in Captain Marvel, seemingly summons her after half the universe’s population is eviscerated by Thanos.
Captain Marvel is being co-directed by Anna Boden (Marvel’s first female director) and Ryan Fleck. The director duo recently shared that principal photography on the film had ended.
Captain Marvel will also serve as the entry point to Avengers 4. Surprisingly, Feige has already given an approximate time that fans could expect an announcement. “That’ll be after the Captain Marvel teaser probably, announcing that title,” Feige told Collider. “It’ll be towards the end of the year with however we launch that film.”
