The first flood of Dunkirk reviews have arrived, soon after Christopher Nolan’s war movie held its world premiere at Dunkirk, France.
The film currently stands at a remarkable 98% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with just one negative review from 40 published since the embargo was lifted by Warner Bros late Tuesday.
“The swift-moving, pulse-pounding Dunkirk reveals its filmmaker at his most nimble, supple, and simple,” writes Dana Stevens in Slate.
“Nolan has crafted a tight, gripping, deeply involving and unforgettable film that ranks about the best war movies of the decade,” says Chicago Sun Times’ Richard Roeper.
“Sensational in every sense of the word; it aims for both the heart and the head, to be sure, but arrives there via the central nervous system,” The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde enthuses.
“The nerve-racking war thriller Dunkirk is the movie Christopher Nolan’s entire career has been building up to, in ways that even he may not have realized,” writes the Village Voice’s Bilge Ebiri.
And finally, IndieWire’s David Ehrlich provides the most enthusiastic poster blurb of them all with, “Christopher Nolan’s largely bloodless but profoundly harrowing war epic is the best film he’s ever made.”
And here’s the sole negative review:
Dunkirk is scheduled for a July 21 release.
