After a decade, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reunite on screen in Men In Black III in 3D to demolish aliens again, deliver laughs, and scare The Avengers off the top of the box office.
MIB III is expected to collect a hefty $73 million in the US this weekend, compared to The Avengers estimated $46 million, slipping about 17%, according to BoxOffice.com. The sci-fi comedy is also poised to perform the same internationally, dropping The Avengers into second place.
In 1997, the first Men In Black debuted at $51 million in North America and made $589 million worldwide. Then in 2002, the sequel collected $52 million on opening and took in a total close to $442 million. This third installment of Men could even seize up to $90 million, claim some industry sources.
With The Avengers the No. 5 film of all time, and Disney's biggest ever grossing movie, holding at No. 1 for a month is a strong performance before its reign draws to an end.
Men In Black III seeks to attract a new generation of fans to this story of stylish battles with extraterrestrials. This go-round involves time-travel back to 1969 to stop Boris, an alien criminal who's intent on assassinating Agent K.
Agent J (Smith) has only 24 hours to save the younger Agent K, played by Josh Brolin (True Grit), who does a perfect deadpan version of Tommy Lee Jones -- or he will be stuck in the past. Also starring Emma Thompson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) as Agent O.
