Nia Vardalos is back with the sequel to the movie that made her a household name just when the memories of the very same households began to slightly fade. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a movie that, for some reason (money?), exists and here is its first trailer.

Back in 2002 Vardalos charmed us all with the antics of her Greek family as she planned her wedding to the very un-Greek John Corbett. Now it’s her daughter’s turn, because you can’t have a sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding without a wedding.

The humour here is decidedly stale. But fans of the original film, which boasts one of the biggest cost-to-profit ratios of all time (it made $368 million on a budget of $5 million), should be pleased.

These are breezy characters, fun to be around for a couple of hours and there’s nothing funnier than charming old people making unsavoury jokes like, “eyes open, knees shut! If your knees are open, shut your eyes.”

Nia Vardalos wrote the film. It’s produced by Tom Hanks and directed by Kirk Jones (What to Expect When You’re Expecting). It will be released in the counter-programming gamble of the year opposite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March, 2016.
