The original Terminator trio is back. Director James Cameron, stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton will return for the sixth Terminator film to be directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool).
The announcement was made at an event organised by the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday. Cameron, who directed the first two films in the Terminator franchise will produce the upcoming film. He crafted the story, which will focus on passing the baton to a new crop of characters, with a writers room that includes David Goyer (The Dark Knight), Charles Eglee (Dark Angel) and Josh Friedman (The Sarah Connor Chronicles).
Cameron wants to do with older female stars what has been done with male actors. “There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys,” he said, “but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centrepiece of the new story,” Cameron said. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
The film doesn’t have a title yet, but is intended to kick off a new trilogy. It’s being set up as a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and will ignore the events of the three films in between - Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Terminator: Salvation and 2015’s Terminator: Genisys - all of which have starred Schwarzenegger.
