IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe’s strict action against food adulteration and unsafe food practices has sparked a wider conversation around food safety and public health in Maharashtra. Mundhe, who heads the state’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has been leading a crackdown on establishments found violating food safety norms, including action against adulterated food, unhygienic practices and businesses that put consumers’ health at risk. His approach has attracted attention for its stringent enforcement and has also found support among several public figures who believe that stronger action is needed to ensure the food reaching people is safe.
Actor Daisy Shah who was recently seen on Alliance is the latest celebrity to voice her support for Mundhe’s efforts, stressing that protecting the quality of the food people consume is about much more than routine administration. She says, “Actions that protect something as fundamental as the food we eat are not just administrative decisions, they are a powerful step towards building a healthier and more responsible society. Tukaram Mundhe’s strict stand against food adulteration and unsafe practices is truly commendable.”

What is the whole issue about?
The issue has gained attention after Mundhe stepped up inspections and enforcement against food adulteration and unsafe practices across Maharashtra. His department has been conducting checks at eateries, food manufacturers, retailers and other establishments, taking action wherever violations of food safety regulations are found. The drive has brought renewed focus on the everyday risks posed by adulterated or unsafe food and the need for stricter implementation of existing safety standards. Mundhe’s firm approach has also triggered a conversation around whether officials who take such strong action should be allowed to continue their work without political or administrative interference.

Several actors from television and Bollywood have also come out in support of Mundhe and his food safety drive.
