2 more held for Alwar gang rape; NHRC notice to state
Rajasthan Police on Wednesday arrested two more suspects in the Alwar gang-rape case even as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asked the state government to reply within six weeks on its “slow response” in the case.

On April 26, five men waylaid a couple travelling on a motorcycle in Alwar, allegedly gang-raped the woman in front of her husband and beat him up. The police made the first arrest in the case on Tuesday, five days after a first information report (FIR) was registered. The suspect has been identified as Indraj Gurjar.
“Accused Mukesh Gurjar was arrested in Sariska forest, while another accused identified as Ashok Gurjar in Hameerpur area of Bansur block,” S Sengathir, inspector general of police (IGP), said on Wednesday. “Two other accused are absconding. Mukesh had shot the video and uploaded it on social media. He has been arrested under the IT Act,” added the IGP.
Indraj and Mukesh were produced in a local court in Alwar on Wednesday. “Mukesh was remanded in police custody till May 13 while Indraj was sent to judicial custody. As his (Indraj’s) name was not mentioned in the FIR, he was arrested with his face covered. The identification of Indraj would be done by victim soon,” said Jagmohan Sharma, DSP, Alwar rural. Ashok will be produced in court on Thursday.
Senior officers at the police headquarters — DGP Kapil Garg and additional DGP Bhagwan Lal Soni — are supervising the investigation after Alwar superintendent of police Rajiv Pachar and Thanagazi police station SHO Sardar Singh were suspended.
Three other police personnel were also placed under suspension after the victim’s family complained that local police did not register a case for days although a plaint was lodged on April 29. An FIR was finally registered on May 2 under the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST Act.
A police officer, who asked not to be named, said the cops were suspended for their “insensitive and unsympathetic approach” towards the victim as they allegedly asked the victim to come after second phase of Lok Sabha elections — May 6 — gets over.
Meanwhile, locals on Wednesday staged a protest against police in Alwar and demanded the arrests of the remaining two accused. The NHRC on Wednesday issued a notice to state chief secretary DB Gupta and DGP Kapil Garg and sought a report in the incident in six weeks. It sought to know why the state government acted so late when the incident took place on April 26.
On Tuesday, minister of state for women and child development department (independent charge) Mamta Bhupesh, and minister of state for labour department Tikaram Jully, met the victim and her family. Bhupesh gave a cheque of ₹4,12,500 to the victim.
