At least 26 pilgrims were injured in a stampede near the famous Garib Nath Temple in Muzaffarpur, 80 km north of Patna on Monday morning.

“People standing in queue wanted to move ahead breaking the line, which resulted in a stampede like situation. However, the forces and magistrate on duty controlled the situation in no time. Nearly 26 pilgrims received minor injuries...” Muzaffarpur SSP Harpreet Kaur said.

“Nearly four lakh devotees had assembled at the Garibnath temple to offer their obeisance by Sunday late night,” said the SSP while speaking to the media.

Eye-witnesses said the stampede broke out after a crowd-control barricade broke down. She added that the situation was soon brought under control.
