The constable who opened fire was identified as Sourav Tyagi.
“The motive behind the incident is not clear yet,” police spokesperson Sokendra Singh told HT over the phone from Bulandshahr.
He confirmed that constable Manoj Yadav died on the spot and head constables Manveer and Chandrapal sustained bullet injuries. “They have been referred to a private hospital in Meerut for treatment,” said Singh.
The incident took place around 9 pm inside the police lines of Bulandshahr, where Tyagi was on duty.
Sources said there was an altercation between him and his colleagues, and in a fit of rage he opened fire with his rifle. When Manveer and Chandrapal tried to overpower him, they also sustained bullet injuries.
Tyagi reportedly turned the gun on himself later.
“We tried to convince him to surrender but he shot himself,” said the police officer. “Senior officers are on the spot and collecting information about the incident. Bulandshahr SSP Anees Ansari, who was attending a meeting in Meerut at the IG office, rushed to the spot with other senior officials.”
