Deoria shelter home case: Now district police chief shunted out

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday transferred five Indian Police Service officers including Rohan P Kanay, the the superintendent of police (SP) of Deoria where a case of sexual exploitation of inmates of a shelter home had come to light.
Deoria district magistrate Sujit Kumar and other officials had already been served marching orders.
Kanay, who has been attached to the director general of police (DGP) office, has been replaced by N Kolanchi, who was the SP, Mahoba. Kunwar Anupam Singh who till now was SP, Anti Terror Squad, becomes the new Mahoba police chief.
Rakesh Shankar, the deputy inspector general, Basti, was also shifted and has also been attached to the DGP’s office. He has been replaced by Ashutosh Kumar.
Sources in the police said there were allegations that Shankar, who was earlier the Deoria SP, supported the infamous shelter home run by Girija Tripathi and did not take action against it despite complaints.
Kanay was accused of not taking action against the shelter home after registration of FIR on July 30. Additional directorhgeneral, Gorakhpur range, Dawa Sherpa had probed the role of the policemen in the issue.
The Deoria incident had come to light when a 10-year-old girl managed to escape from the shelter house and informed the police, after which the home was raided and 24 girls rescued.
