About half-a-dozen policemen were injured in clashes with villagers in Jharkhand’s Pakur district, after a team arrived in Dangapara reportedly after receiving information that cows were allegedly being slaughtered.

Three policemen were reportedly injured in the morning as villagers allegedly chased the team away, and two others were injured later in the day when some pelted stones at the officers near Maheshpur police station.

Police imposed Section 144 (restricting assembly of four or more people) and resorted to lathicharge and firing of tear gas to bring the situation under control.

“Pakur deputy commissioner and superintendent of police (SP) are camping (in Maheshpur). Deputy inspector general was also sent along with additional forces to bring the situation under control,” said additional director general and Jharkhand police spokesperson RK Mallick.

The officer clarified that it was not an instance of communal violence but a law and order issue. “Police had to resort to minor lathicharge to disperse the agitating people from police station. Heavy deployment of security forces have been made,” he said.

Police identified the injured as assistant sub-inspector Nand Kishor Singh, and constables Sanjay Kumar Yadav and Mayashankar Singh, who were admitted to community a health centre. Pakur civil surgeon Bhagawat Marandi said Nand Kishor and Sanjay were referred to Malda Medical College for a CT scan.
