Elephant calf dies after being knocked down by train in Assam

The accident occurred around 3 km from the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. On preliminary investigation by forest personnel, it was found that the calf was hit by the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express.

An elephant calf was killed after being hit by a train at Bhelaguri, Nakachari under Mariani Range in Assam’s Jorhat district in the early hours on Friday.

The incident took place around 3.30 am when a male calf around 6 to 7 months old was knocked down by a train while it was trying to cross the tracks. It died on the spot. (HT PHOTO.)

The accident occurred around 3 km from the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary. On preliminary investigation by forest personnel, it was found that the calf was hit by the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express.

The post-mortem of the carcass was conducted and other formalities are being carried out, a forest department statement indicated.

Five elephants have died this year so far after being mowed down by trains.
