Inmates and associates of a notorious criminal orchestrated a riot at a correctional home in Hooghly district on Wednesday evening and set the kicthen on fire.
At least 10 prison guards and officials were injured in the riot that was stopped late in the evening after additional police forces and the Rapid Action Force were deployed. The police lobbed several tear gas shells inside the facility to disperse the inmates who were pelting stones from the ramparts.
Five jail guards and deputy jailer Biswarup Singh were rushed to hospital with head injuries.
Officials said trouble started when Nepo Giri, a notorious criminal wanted for multiple crimes in Hooghly and Howrah districts, was brought to the correctional home from court. While being searched, Giri created a stir apparently while trying to hide something he was carrying or to send a signal to his old associates who were already lodged in the correctional home. Soon, the inmates started attacking the guards and officials.
Police contingents from Hooghly town and other parts of the district rushed to the spot and set up a cordon. Hooghly district magistrate Sanjay Bansal and Chandernagore police commissioner Ajay Kumar rushed to the spot. The situation came under control after more than two hours. The fire in the main kitchen was doused by three fire tenders.
“The inmates even attacked policemen after we entered the correctional home. Many were injured,” said Ajay Kumar.
Giri, who was lodged in the facility about two years ago, had created similar trouble in the past, officials said. He is a former associate of contract killer and extortionist Hubba Shyamal .
