Gunmen loot ₹5.77 lakh from SBI in Kashmir’s Kulgam
Police said a group of gunmen, suspected to be militants, barged into a branch of the SBI Bank in Qaimoh area of Kulgam in the afternoon.
Unidentified gunmen looted ₹5.77 lakh from a bank in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday.
Police said a group of gunmen, suspected to be militants, barged into a branch of the SBI Bank in Qaimoh area of Kulgam in the afternoon.
“The militants were 7–8 in number and they managed to take away ₹5,77,850 from the SBI bank,” said an official manning police control room, Kulgam.
Security forces immediately cordoned the area to trace the robbers.
On Friday, a civilian and two security guards were injured after gunmen opened fire inside a bank during an alleged robbery attempt in the district.
Police said people foiled the attempt of the militants to allegedly loot a Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Mohanpora, Kulgam.
Last year, there were a series of bank robberies in Kashmir, a majority of them targeting J&K bank, the biggest bank of the state.
Police had blamed militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba for the incidents, saying they were “cash-starved”. However, the militants had denied the allegations.
