Unidentified gunmen looted Rs 5.77 lakh from a bank in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Wednesday.
Police said a group of gunmen, suspected to be militants, barged into a branch of the SBI Bank in Qaimoh area of Kulgam in the afternoon.
“The militants were 7–8 in number and they managed to take away Rs 5,77,850 from the SBI bank,” said an official manning police control room, Kulgam.
Security forces immediately cordoned the area to trace the robbers.
On Friday, a civilian and two security guards were injured after gunmen opened fire inside a bank during an alleged robbery attempt in the district.
Police said people foiled the attempt of the militants to allegedly loot a Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Mohanpora, Kulgam.
Last year, there were a series of bank robberies in Kashmir, a majority of them targeting J&K bank, the biggest bank of the state.
Police had blamed militants of Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba for the incidents, saying they were “cash-starved”. However, the militants had denied the allegations.
