Heatwave respite for Delhiites from June 11, some drizzle likely too: IMD

According to the IMD, the mercury is expected to shoot up to 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi on Tuesday.

Delhi is likely to receive some respite from the scorching heat from June 11 as heatwave conditions may abate from that time, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday. Senior scientist at IMD RK Jenamani said the temperature in the national capital will remain between 44 degrees Celsius to 46 degrees Celsius, adding cloudy conditions and drizzle are expected around the weekend.

Speaking to news agency ANI, the IMD official said heatwave conditions at isolated places will continue till June 8 and/or June 9. “Cloudy conditions and drizzle expected on June 11 over northwest India and parts of central India due to western disturbance. Heatwave to abate from June 11,” Jenamani was quoted as saying.

According to the IMD, the mercury is expected to shoot up to 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi on Tuesday. A yellow alert has also been issued, with the weather department urging residents to stay indoors as far as possible.

On Monday, the weather department had warned of heatwave conditions at isolated places in the national capital - a maximum temperature of 44.9 degrees Celsius was recorded on Monday.

It further predicted that the heatwave would be prevalent in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality was recorded in the poor category on Tuesday morning. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the hourly Air Quality Index (AQI) was 219 at 10 am. On Monday, the average 24-hour AQI was 195, in the higher end of the moderate category. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, and 401 and 500 severe.
