The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday arrested three terrorists belonging to the Hizbul Mujahideen in connection with the killing of sarpanch Shabir Ahmed Mir in Kulgam.

“Three terrorists have been arrested. A terror module of the proscribed terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen involved in the recent killing of sarpanch Shabir Ahmed Mir has been busted and incriminating material including two pistols have been recovered from them,” Vijay Kumar, IGP Kashmir told news agency ANI.

“Vehicles used in the commission of crime have also been seized. During the investigation, it was learnt that the Sarpanch was killed by Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Mushtaq Yatoo on the directions of Hizbul's chief commander Farooq Nalli,” the IGP added.

Shabir Ahmed Mir was shot by terrorists at his home in Kulgam, 70 kilometres away from Srinagar on March 11. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. This was the third killing of a sarpanch in past ten days.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the sarpanch had been given an accommodation at a secured hotel in Srinagar but he went home without informing the police personnel.

The slain panchayat leader was initially identified as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, but the claim was later denied.

On March 9, a sarpanch named Sameer Ahmed Bhat was shot dead by terrorists in Khonmoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar. According to investigations, the terrrorists stormed his house and fired two bullets in his chest. Bhat was immediately rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

On March 2, a panchayat member named Mohammad Yaqoob Dar was shot dead by the terrorists in Kulgam district.

The top security officials had held a meeting over the killing of three local body representatives in the span of ten days in the Kashmir valley.
