Karnataka bypolls: Jamkhandi saw an increased turnout with 77.17% of electors exercising their franchise, against 75.51% in May.

The Congress’s candidate Anand Nyamgouda on Tuesday won the Jamkhandi assembly seat in Bagalkot district of the Mumbai-Karnataka region by a margin of 39,480 votes.

Anand defeated Shrikant Kulkarni of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who lost out by less than 3,000 votes in May. Anand was backed by the Janata Dal (Secular).

The Jamkhandi assembly constituency fell vacant after Anand’s father Siddu Nyamgouda, the sitting legislator, died in a car accident in May, days after he was elected to the assembly.

Jamkhandi saw an increased turnout with 77.17% of electors exercising their franchise, against 75.51% in May.
