Kerala police have not exonerated popular Malayalam actor Dileep, who was questioned for 13 hours on Wednesday, in connection with the abduction and rape of a woman actor in Kochi four months ago, officials said on Thursday.
Kochi rural superintendent of police AV George said they have to get more clarity on certain issues and the actor, his friend and manager will be summoned again.
Police sources said currently the probe is mainly focussed on the conspiracy angle behind the case.
However, the beleaguered actor put up a brave face saying he cleared all doubts of the investigating team. “Investigation is progressing well and I hope the truth will emerge soon,” he said.
Dileep and his actor friend Nadirshah were summoned by the police on Wednesday and questioned at the police club in Aluva. Their prolonged interrogation triggered enough suspense and drama outside the police club.
During the investigation, Dileep reportedly told the police he did not know the main accused Sunil Kumar alias Pulsar Suni. However, he admitted he was not in a cordial relation with the victim. He also claimed that when one of his friends told him about the attack he tried to call the actor on phone but she was unavailable.
He added though there were some differences between them he never had any intention to hurt her.
The incident took place on February 17 when the actor, who was returning after a shooting, was waylaid and abducted by a gang led by Suni. They sexually assault her in the moving car and took photos and video of the act. They let her go after three hours and threatened to release the video if she approached the police.
During the attack, Suni told the woman he was given a contract and he was forced to do this.
Suni and three of his accomplices were arrested later. However, some friends of the woman and Congress MLA PT Thomas, who was in the forefront to help the victim, alleged a conspiracy behind the attack.
The police are yet to recover the mobile phone used in the crime.
The case took a new turn after Dileep filed a police complaint, saying Vishnu, an inmate of the jail where Suni is lodged, threatened him to cough up Rs 1.50 crore immediately or else “he would reveal their role in the conspiracy.” Vishnu also alleged he was offered Rs 2 crore by his rivals to implicate him in the case.
Soon after this a letter purportedly written by Suni from the jail and an audio tape of the person threatening Dileep also surfaced. Last week, the police arrested Vishnu and his accomplice in connection with the blackmail attempt. In view of latest incidents, the police recorded the woman’s statement again last week.
In her new statement, she reportedly told the police that some forces in the Malayalam cinema were out to scuttle her chances and they carried out a discreet campaign against her.
Though she did not name Dileep the needle of suspicion was on him. The woman was cast with Dileep in many hit films but later they fell out due to some unknown reasons.
