Vijayan made the statement while responding to CPI(M) MLA CK Hareendran’s notice during the ongoing Assembly session. Hareendran’s notice was regarding the plight of students who returned from Ukraine without completing their education following the war and seeking the CM’s intervention in the issue.

In his notice, Hareedran stressed the need for steps to be taken for such students to ensure they complete their education and also recover the certificates and other documents left behind in Ukraine amid the war.

He further said the central government will have to play a huge role in ensuring that students who have returned from Ukraine complete their education as well as get their documents back from the war-torn nation.

On Friday, the Kerala government earmarked 10 crore in the state budget for students who came back from Ukraine.

Speaking on the issue of admissions for evacuated students, Vijayan said, “Further decisions on the education of medical students returning from Ukraine can be taken only on the recommendation of the National Medical Commission, which has guidelines for completing internships of medical students who return without completing their courses or internships due to unusual and compelling circumstances such as the Covid-19 pandemic or wars.”

He said over 3,379 residents of Kerala, including students, who had been trapped in Ukraine as a result of Russia's invasion, had been brought back safely with the help of the Centre and the association of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs.
