The Naga Students’ Federation on Tuesday protested and marched to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, demanding a resolution against the imposition of Vande Mataram at official events.

The group said their protest was not intended to insult the nation but to protect the identity and beliefs of Naga people.
Spearheaded by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), an influential student body covering Naga inhabited areas, the students carried out a peaceful demonstration outside the NLA complex holding placards calling for state legislators to protect the identity and beliefs of Naga people.
The NSF has been opposing the January 2026 directive by the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) mandating that the national song be sung or played before the national anthem during official functions and educational institutions. The student body’s contention is that such a directive should not be imposed on schools, educational institutions and students.
