Police yet to arrest Falahari Maharaj over rape case despite hospital clearance
Officials say decision on arrest will be taken after “further investigation and after into taking consideration his health”india Updated: Sep 22, 2017 14:30 IST
Rajasthan police are yet to arrest spiritual guru Kaushlendra Falahari Maharaj over a recent allegation of rape, nearly a day after a private hospital said he was healthy enough to be taken out of the facility.
Maharaj, 70, commands a strong following and the delay in his arrest has raised speculation that police may be holding back due to political pressure.
Shortly after the allegations emerged on Wednesday, a BJP district president called it a “conspiracy” to frame the baba.
The case was filed by a 21-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh, who said that she encouraged by the rape conviction of another cult leader — Dera Sacha Sauda’s Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh — to come forward. The police case was registered in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur on September 11, and the files were brought to Alwar — Maharaj’s base — on September 20.
“A decision on the arrest will be taken following further investigation and after taking into consideration the health of the accused. He is currently at the hospital and has been questioned by the police,” additional superintendent of police, Alwar, Mool Singh Rana, told HT on Friday.
Cult leaders such as Maharaj and Singh are in focus particularly since the Dera Sacha Sauda chief’s conviction. Like Maharaj, the Dera leader too enjoyed support from a number of political parties, including the BJP and the Congress.
“His condition is stable and as far as doctors are concerned, he is free to go,” said Pankaj Sharma, director of the private hospital where the self-styled godman is currently admitted.
Officials said that the victim is being brought to Jaipur following which the police will speak with her.
“She was raped by the baba who promised that she will become a judge one day. The girl came back to Bilaspur and narrated the whole incident to family members,” said additional superintendent of police, Bilaspur, Archana Jha.
