Bhopal: Four people have lost their vision due to infections after undergoing cataract surgeries at a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara on September 25.

Chief minister Kamal Nath, who has been a lawmaker from Chhindwara, ordered an inquiry into the matter on Wednesday and promised best treatment to the four.
“An order has been issued for conducting an inquiry into patients having lost vision in Chhindwara after cataract surgeries. Strict action will be taken against those who are found guilty. The state government will bear expenses of the treatment of patients and all efforts will be made to restore the vision of the patients,” tweeted Nath.
In August, 15 people lost their vision after cataract surgeries at a private hospital in Indore.
Dr C S Gedam, an ophthalmologist at the Chhindwara Medical College, said the four complained of irritation in their eyes on Tuesday. “ We are treating them.”
Gedam added one of the patients, Munna Chaure, 50, was referred to a private hospital in Nagpur as he required immediate treatment to stop spread of infection to other parts of his body.
Another patient, Kala Bai Vankhede, said, “When the doctor removed the bandage from my eye, I felt irritation in my eyes and could not see anything with the eye.”
Chhindwara Medical College dean GB Ramteke said, “An inquiry has been initiated. We are trying to know the reason behind the spread of infection.”
Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopal Bhargava attacked the Congress-led state government and demanded a high level inquiry into the matter.
“When the patients are not safe in the constituency and home town of chief minister, how can we expect better medical facilities in other parts of Madhya Pradesh,” he asked.
