Raghav Chadha news highlights: Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha launched fresh attacks on the AAP and the BJP raked up the issue of ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ targeting Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday. Meanwhile, the AAP said it will approach Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman CP Radhakrishnan, seeking the disqualification of seven of its MPs who announced a merger with the BJP.

Sanjay Singh said that AAP will write to Rajya Sabha chairman, seeking disqualification of seven MPs under anti-defection law, reported news agency PTI.

The move came after former deputy leader of the AAP in the Upper House Raghav Chadha announced that a majority of the party’s MPs in the Rajya Sabha had decided to merge with the BJP.

“We have decided that we, 2/3rd of members belonging to the AAP in Rajya Sabha, exercise the provisions of the Constitution of India and merge with the BJP,” Chadha told mediapersons on Friday

He added that seven MPs had signed a letter formalising the decision, which was submitted to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Following the announcement, the lawmakers also met BJP president Nitin Nabin.

AAP considers anti-defection provisions

Earlier on Friday, AAP leader Sanjay Singh said the move would be challenged under the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution.

In a post on X, he said, “I will submit a letter to the Hon’ble Rajya Sabha Chairman, in which a demand will be made to declare Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, and Sandeep Pathak disqualified from Rajya Sabha membership for joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as this is tantamount to voluntarily relinquishing membership of their original party under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.”

Raghav Chadha news LIVE updates: Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Saturday levelled serious allegations against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, calling him “anti-women” and accusing him of involvement in “corruption and gundagardi.”

Maliwal made the remarks a day after formally joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"Arvind Kejriwal had me beaten up by a goon in my own house. Raghav Chadha news LIVE updates: Sanjay Singh says defections ‘not allowed’ even in ‘two-thirds majority’

Raghav Chadha news LIVE updates: AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Saturday said the party will write to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan seeking the disqualification of seven MPs who quit the party a day earlier.

Singh claimed that the move by the MPs has no constitutional validity under the anti-defection framework.

“Anti-defection law clearly states that any type of split or faction cannot happen in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. It does not carry any legal recognition, even if it's a two-thirds majority,” PTI quoted him as saying.

He further argued that neither the anti-defection law nor the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution recognises any split, breakaway group, or faction in either House of Parliament, regardless of numerical strength.

Calling the move “unconstitutional” and “illegal,” Singh said the MPs’ decision to align with the BJP cannot be treated as a valid political merger.

“I am writing to the vice president of India, and chairman of Rajya Sabha, to disqualify the seven MPs,” he added.

Raghav Chadha news LIVE updates: What comes under anti-defection law

Under the anti-defection law, the final call now rests with the Rajya Sabha Chairman, CP Radhakrishnan, who will examine whether the claimed merger meets the conditions laid out in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution.

The provisions require the Chairman to assess if the move qualifies as a valid merger — including whether the required two-thirds of members have supported it.

The outcome of this probe will be crucial, as it will determine whether the MPs retain their seats or face disqualification from the House.
