People across India have taken to social media with confusion and despair after Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services went down in India across multiple apps, causing chaos and several failed payments.

One user on X, showed a failed UPI transaction screenshot and said, “Why this mf UPI is down ab ice cream kha li payment nahi ho raha kya karu (I ate the ice-cream but the payment won't go through, what do I do).”
The popular payment method has left several people hanging, waiting to pay for even the smallest of items. Another user said, “UPI hi down ho gaya, 2 dost pani puri kha ke dukan pr khade hai 30 min se (UPI is down, two of my friends ate pani puri and are waiting at the shop since 30 minutes waiting to pay).”

One user added to the complaints and said, “UPI has been failing since the last hour servers are down. Aaj bartan dhulwa ke hi manega (Today we will have to wash dishes to get out of this).”
Making a witty observation on the connection between UPI payment and tapris (roadside stalls) across the country, one person said, #UPI at all tapris outside and in campus seem down? Is this happening everywhere? Is this an Indian economy crash moment? :p."
Giving a positive spin to the situation, where many customers were distraught, one user on X said, “upi down, millions of rupees saved across the nation.”
However, another user sarcastically stated that, this was a great opportunity for those who had to pay him back, “UPI is down incase anyone is paying me back today.”
According to DownDetector, there were 2,750 complaints related to the UPI snag as of 7:50 pm. There were 296 complaints by Google Pay users according to the website.
A person on social media summed up the situation saying, “UPI servers are down. Isi din ke lie gharwale bolte the cash rakha karo (This is why my family used to say keep cash with you).”
