So claim the Lucknow Police after getting a high-tech multi-purpose state-of-the-art ‘Interceptor Vehicle’ to manage traffic.

Each vehicle is a modified version of Maruti Versa and costs Rs 20 lakh. Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh handed over the vehicles to the district police chiefs of Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Varanasi in a formal function held at the Reserve Police Lines here on Tuesday.

Interestingly, the city gets only one interceptor vehicle to monitor 36 crossings in four hours. That’s no help, but a good move to enforce traffic norms.

The vehicles have been provided by the Union Ministry of Surface Transport and National Highways. Traffic cops would now be able to monitor speed of vehicles in a sphere of one kilometer and could read numbers of those violating traffic norms moving around 150 metres of the vehicle. The seats in the vehicle are in the ‘moving mode’ to facilitate cops keep an all-around view at crossings.

Besides, the machine can also be put in the ‘automatic mode’ to record and register details of the vehicles violating rules, like exceeding the average speed or jumping the stop-lines.

The vehicle is provided with power back-up and power-recharging systems.

Other facilities of recording details with the help of digital and still photography, video-recording, DVD are available in the vehicle. To catch the photograph, the equipment can be revolved up to 90 degrees.

The vehicle is also equipped to show the recorded pictures on an LCD monitor. The vehicle would also carry breathalyser, high-intensity light-bars, sirens and graphic warning system to avoid fire tragedies.

SP (Traffic) Onkar Singh said, “We are planning to station the vehicle near major crossings during busy hours.”
