10 athletes to represent India in YWC

Prabhjot Singh and G Mounica will spearhead the Indian challenge in the boys and girls sections respectively in the 6th IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships to be held in Bressanone, Italy from July 8-12.

Prabhjot Singh and G Mounica will spearhead the Indian challenge in the boys and girls sections respectively in the 6th IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships to be held in Bressanone, Italy from July 8-12.

Prabhjot had won the discus event with a national record throw of 59.62m in the National Youth Championships in Madurai last month.

Andhra Pradesh girl Monika had won the 200m race with a national record timing of 24.88secs in Madurai.

The 10-member Indian team also has shot putter Gurwant Singh who was declared the best athlete among boys in Madurai for winning the event with a throw of 18.20m.

In the last world championships in Ostrava in Czech Republic in 2007, India were represented by 12 athletes and returned without a medal.

The best performance there was that of Indian girls' relay team who finished fifth. Ajay Pal Singh reached the final in boys shot put but had to settle for a ninth-place finish.

The Indian Team:

Boys: Amiya Mallick (200m); Ankit Sharma (Long Jump); Arpinder Singh (Triple Jump); Gurwant Singh (Shot Put); Prabhjot Singh (Discus); Kirpal Singh (Discus).

Girls: Ranjita Mahanta (100m); G Mounica (200M); Aswathi Mohanan (400m); C Arya (400m).
