The early-morning accident occurred when two trains bound from Jakarta to Surabaya, Indonesia's second city, collided, a police official at Gubug near the crash site said.

"According to the latest information, 14 people are killed and 12 are injured," police official Winarno told Reuters. One of the train drivers was among the dead.

He said hundreds of passengers had been evacuated from the scene, and the busy line closed to all traffic.

Train crashes and other transport accidents are relatively frequent in Indonesia, where infrastructure has strained to keep pace with population and economic growth.
