The clash occurred on Tuesday in Shaiqh Qalander area of Panjwayi district in the southern Kandahar province, spokesman Dawood Ahmadi said.

In the fight, which lasted for about 90 minutes, nine militants and seven officers were also wounded, Ahmadi said.

The rebels took away their dead and wounded as they fled from the scene and police are pursuing them, he said.

Southern Afghanistan has been beset recently with the worst violence since the ouster of the former Taliban regime in late 2001.
