MORE THAN 1,600 AIDS patients have been detected so far in Madhya Pradesh and 136 of them were afflicted with the dreaded disease due to transfusion of contaminated blood, Health Minister Ajay Bishnoi told the Assembly today.

An inquiry would be conducted to fix responsibility for transfusing contaminated blood though the AIDS infection was estimated on the basis of the contention of the victims, Bishnoi said in reply to Saroj Bachhan Nayak (JD-U), who raised the issue during question hour.

An action plan was being implemented to check transfusion of contaminated blood by providing kits and equipment to the blood banks for HIV tests, he said. Though Madhya Pradesh was categorised as “low prevalence” State with regard to AIDS, 1,609 cases of the dreaded disease had already been detected with Indore recording the highest 469 cases, Ujjain 287, Dewas 71 and Jabalpur 112, Bishnoi said.

The Health Minister said anti-retroviral therapy centre was already functioning at the Indore Medical College Hospital, while a similar centre was proposed to be set up in Jabalpur this year.
