Sources said the FTC judge had found Akilesh Kumar Bajpai, a resident of Nirala Nagar, Kanpur and Ratan Kumar Biswas, a resident of Etawah, guilty of smuggling drugs and awarded them 14 years imprisonment. He also sentenced six others Shabhu Prasad, Bhola Prasad, Lal Ji Yadav, Govind Singh, Virendra and Jitendra to 10 years imprisonment.
Sources said Intelligence Officer of the Narcotics Department Sanjeev Kumar Singh received an information that a huge haul of drug was coming to Kanpur from Nepal on March 5, 2004. He along with his staff started surveillance on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway when they observed a truck (No. UHM-9137) coming from Lucknow halted near Kanodia petrol pump. The sleuths observed that three persons— Shambhu, Bhola Prasad and Lalji Yadav— were sitting in the cabin.
When they question them, the occupants could not give them proper reply.
Therefore, the team carried out a thorough search of the vehicle and recovered 2.5 quintal of charas packed in 14 bags hidden in a special place made underneath the cabin.
During questioning, they told the narcotics team that they were going to deliver the contraband to one Akhilesh Bajpai. Later, the team raided the house of Akhilesh and arrested him along with three others Govind Singh, Virendra and Jitendra. Further inquiry reveled that the contraband was to be supplied to one Ratan Biswas of Etwah. He was also arrested later.
