Police said a sweeper who had come to clear the garbage spotted the baby. "While I was picking up rags, I heard the cry of a baby from the dump. I then found a baby lying in the mud," said the sweeper. "Insects were crawling all over her. I immediately called the police," he added.

Eyewitness said the baby was completely drenched in rain. Till the police came, the residents had cleaned her up. A police control room (PCR) van rushed her to the district hospital in Noida.

This is the third such incident to have been reported from the city in the past three months. Noida or the neighbouring Ghaziabad have no shelter homes for such babies and NGOs have to take them to nearby towns such as Meerut.

"The girl is barely 15 days old. There were marks of insect bites all over her. When she came to us, her body temperature was severely below normal. We had to give her injections to normalise her temperature," said Dr Raj Singh, a child specialist at the district hospital.

"Presently, she is in the ICU. All blood tests will be conducted on Wednesday. She is suffering from various infections, whose nature can be confirmed only after the tests. She is stable and out of danger," he added.

Meanwhile the police have registered a case at the Sector 24 police station and are trying to trace the baby's parents. "Chances are high that the baby was dumped by an unwed mother. We have taken the child's picture and sent it to all police stations to identify her parents," said a senior police officer. The police are also scanning the records of nearby nursing homes.
