17 injured in footwear factory fire

Seventeen persons were injured, five of them seriously, when a major fire broke out in the godown of a footwear factory in Jugania locality of Bajaria police circle in Kanpur on Thursday.
The condition of five persons who received 90 per cent burns was critical, Chief Medical Superintendent Istwar Saran said.
According to Uttar Pradesh Fire service sources the fire broke out at 1.15 pm at the footwear factory of Hafiz Rias after a kerosene stove burst.
Most of the thirty workers present when the fire broke out were under twenty years and some of them were even below twelve years, police said.
Six fire tenders took more than three hours to extinguish the flames as they had to negotiate through narrow streets.
The injured were admitted to the UHM Hospital in Kanpur from where the five critically injured were referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and investigations are being carried out into the cause of the fire, Senior Superintendant of Police PC Meena said.
