The Kerala police on Monday booked two CPI(M) MLAs in connection with the attack on chief minister Oommen Chandy in Kannur, north Kerala, on Sunday.
Chandy, who received minor injuries in the attack, has been admitted in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
Cases have been registered against MLAs KK Narayanan and C Krishnan, who were present at the scene when the attack took place. The police have arrested 22 persons, booked under various offences including attempt to murder.
The CPI(M), however, maintained it had no role in the attack and the police were framing its leaders.
“We do not believe in physical intimidation and attacks. We welcome a high-level inquiry into this,” party state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said.
Kerala culture minister KC Joseph, who was present with the CM when the incident took place, said it was a planned attack and the CPI(M) would have to pay a heavy price for it.
Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan called on Chandy in the morning.
The chief minister was in Kannur to attend the closing ceremony of the state police sports meet. The attack is being viewed as a serious security lapse.
For the past two months, LDF workers have been demanding his resignation for his alleged involvement in the solar scam.
