2000 more men to be added for NDRF: govt

Union home minister Rajnath Singh has decided to add two more battalions (around 2000 men) in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) which is in the forefront of rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir. One of the new battalions will have a base in Varasani which is the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh has decided to add two more battalions (around 2000 men) in the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) which is in the forefront of rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir. One of the new battalions will have a base in Varasani which is the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The two new will be deployed in Varansai and Arunchal Pradesh respectively as both are sensitive areas with regard to disaster management in the country. These battalions will come from Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which is another paramilitary force of the home ministry,” said a home ministry source.

At the moment, there are 10 battalions in the NDRF which is has become the visible face of national disaster management structure in the country. In fact some in the government call it the only success story of country’s national disaster management structure.

Before leaving for a two-day trip to Gujarat, Rajnath singh approved in the proposal for which cabinet approval will be sought soon.
