2010 asian games

Dream on

india Updated: Jan 01, 2010 01:22 IST

There were few cheers for Indian athletes at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. The ignominious exit of the men's hockey team was followed by one of the worst performances on track, which culminated in Santhi Soundrarajan being stripped of her silver medal.

The on-court spat between Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi only added to the woes.
But towards the fag end, the desert rain brought happy tidings and pistol shooter Jaspal Rana clinched three gold. The 2010 Asian Games at Guangzhou, which commence exactly a month after the Commonwealth Games, could test the athletes more than the CWG.

If Rana is able to keep his fighting qualities intact, Abhinav Bindra gets back to full training and Gagan Narang can keep his form intact, there is every reason to expect a good haul from the shooters. But then, it's track and field, which can give the tally a healthy look.

And the way the boxers have been trading punches, don't be surprise if a blow plucks a gold or a silver in the Chinese City. Vijender has rankled the best in the business, and with Suranjoy hooking and ducking like a pro anything is possible inside the ring.
