At least 47 persons of a marriage party were killed and 25 others, including the groom, were injured when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a 40-feet deep pond in Assam's Barpeta district late on Wednesday night.
The toll is likely to go up as the groom's relatives have claimed there were 80 people on the bus, which was on its way to the marriage venue, Barpeta police superintendent Debraj Upadhyay, said over phone from the accident site at Sarupeta.
The bodies fished out so far included that of 24 women and seven children, he said adding that CRPF and police along with local villagers were working to salvage more bodies.
The mishap occurred when the bus was on its way from Roha to the wedding venue at a village near Sarupeta when it skidded on the muddy road and fell into the pond at around 11 pm, Upadhyay said.
Police assisted by army personnel from a nearby camp and local villagers fished out the bodies and salvaged the bus last night, besides rescuing 25 persons including the bridegroom, he said.
After initial attempts to salvage the bus with ropes failed, two cranes were procured from nearby Bongaigaon district to retrieve the vehicle from the pond.
The groom, who is in a critical condition, has been sent to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, while the rest of the injured have been admitted to hospitals at Pathsala and Sarupeta, Upadhyay added.
