At least five Palestinian militants have been killed in the first targeted air strike approved by the new Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz, a day after he assumed office.

The Israeli army confirmed the attack which occurred on Friday evening saying it "targeted a compound used by Palestinian Resistance Committee (PRC) terrorists for training to carry out attacks against Israel."

"Several terrorists were training in the compound at the time of the attack," it said.

Palestinian sources also confirmed five casualties saying that the dead men were training at a base used by the PRC, an umbrella group of the Palestinian militant factions.

Body parts and blood was scattered around the site of the attack not far from the home of Moumtaz Dourghmush, the top militant commander in the resistance committees, they said.

Dourghmush's two brothers were among the dead.

"God willing, this is not going to stop our heroic battle against the Zionists, and the blood is the fuel of our resistance and our reprisal is coming soon," Abu Mujahid, a representative of the PRC said.

The Israeli army said that the measure was taken in response to the continuous rocket fire against Israeli targets being carried out by the PRC.

"The army will continue to track down those who support and are involved in terror attacks," it said.
