Civic officials said heavy rain could have triggered a mudslide that resulted in the collapse at Aksa chawl in Sainiknagar around 4.15 pm on Thursday.

“The mudslide made the retaining wall and the structure above it collapse. There was a passage next to the wall and people standing there came under the debris. The structure of the chawl — built 10 years ago and housing 10 — had become weak as rainwater from a nearby hill had seeped into its foundation,” said deputy municipal commissioner (anti-encroachment) B.G. Pawar.
