8 die as rain lashes North, army help sought in Haryana

Eight persons died on Wednesday as rain wreaked havoc in northern India, causing major rivers to swell dangerously and flood several areas. The army has been called in for relief and rescue operations in Haryana.

Four people were killed and the Chardham Yatra was halted as heavy rain lashed Uttarakhand. Most of the rivers there were flowing at danger level.

Two children were killed when their house collapsed following heavy rain in Mehargaon village in Tehri district. In Vikasnagar town, a woman was buried under the debris of her house.

Uttarkashi received 110 mm of rainfall followed by Mussoorie at 109 mm, Tehri 101 mm and Rudraprayag 100 mm. Heavy rain lashed parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, causing the Yamuna to inundate more than three dozen villages in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, where the army was called in.
