Enthusiasm was writ large in the faces of a group of elderly at a dance workshop organised by 'HelpAge India', an NGO working for the care of the aged in India, on the occasion of World Dance Day.
"People like us have to be engaged in such activities to lead a healty life. Such workshops provide the right platform," retired Major General Surat Sandhu, a participant at the workshop said.
Chief Executive of Helpage, Mathew Cherian said, "This initiative intends to dispel the myth that older people cannot enjoy life. There are not many opportunities in India for recreation of senior citizens."
According to the organisation, an estimated one lakh senior citizens are leading lonely lives in Delhi alone.
A seminar was organised by Natya Vriksha on 'State of Indian Dance Today' where noted dance observer and critic Leela Venkatraman analysed the crisis Indian dances are facing today.
