AKHIL BHARATIYA Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) State unit’s rhetoric against Governor and chancellor Balram Jakhar continued at the national convention of the organisation held recently at Hyderabad, with an official resolution terming the ‘political’ appointments of vice-chancellors with ‘criminal backgrounds’ as a matter of shame.

The resolution on the present educational scenario stated vice-chancellors are appointed on political basis. It is matter of shame that out of the vice-chancellors appointed by the chancellor and Governor of MP, four were found to be having criminal background and two of them had to be removed from their posts’.

The national convention further urged all State Governments to nominate vice-chancellors of universities on the basis of competence and good reputation, so that the dignity of the institution was maintained.

National secretary of the organisation and Bhopal region in-charge Vishnudutt Sharma shared details of the national convention including the three resolutions passed by the convention and one passed by the national executive council of the organisation with the local media at a press conference on Tuesday.

Other educational issues from the State found prominence in the resolution on ‘present education scenario’. However, the Ujjain incident where a professor was killed did not find mention. The resolution mentioned the DMAT issue and said irregularities in entrance exams like DMAT (and others in other states) were of serious concern and that the Jabalpur High Court had raised questions regarding the failure of the MP Government to bring about appropriate legislation (regarding admission policy for private professional colleges).

The issue of inviting tenders for running Industrial Training Institutes and Polytechnics by the State Government was also condemned as an effort at encouraging global competition and commercialisation of education and expressed concern at this trend.

The other two resolutions passed were on `present national scenario’ and `deteriorating internal security situation’. The national executive council passed a resolution on the `present scenario of education campuses’.

Sharma while speaking to media persons also raised concern about the proposed private university bill and said a discussion involving academicians, media persons and students’ organisations should be conducted before finalising the details, so as to prevent commercialisation. The ABVP has already held a seminar in this respect and submitted recommendations to the State Government.

1857 anniversary celebrations: The national convention decided that year-long programmes would be held from May 10 onwards to the mark the 150th anniversary of the 1857 freedom struggle and centenary of martyr Bhagat Singh.

Sharma said a committee has been constituted to chalk out details and aspects of freedom struggle and individuals who remained unsung would be taken up during the programme.

Regional organising secretary of ABVP Surendra Shukla was also present at press conference.
