He was addressing a workshop of the State Innovation in Family Planning Services Project Agency (SIFPSA) at a hotel in the Cantonment area here.

He said efforts were on to persuade more men to undergo vasectomy, which he called the best method of family planning. He said No Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) was one of the most safe options.

“It takes five to seven minutes to perform an NSV operation after which the patient can return home,” he said.

Dr Singh also discussed the National Rural Health Mission and its various components such as appointment of a trained woman ‘Asha’ in each village, the Janani Suraksha Yojna and routine immunisation. He added that routine immunisation camps were being organised across the district.

He said the health department was trying to bring down the maternity and infant mortality rates by 50 per cent within seven years and increase the use of contraceptives from 22 per cent to 52 per cent by the year 2016.

Chief development officer and District Family Planning Services Project Agency member Pramod Agrawal outlined the importance of disseminating various family planning programmes.

SIFPSA project manager Dr Awadhesh Singh welcomed the guests.

He said the main objectives of SIFPSA were to promote family planning, improve quality of services and ensure greater participation.

District health education and information officer Dr SC Joshi conducted the programme. Deputy chief medical officer (Family Planning) Dr CS Kannaujjiya proposed a formal vote of thanks.
