Advani was among a host of senior leaders of the BJP who were campaigning in the state on Saturday two weeks before the polls on December 12.
He was due to address public meetings in two different districts, officials said.
The electoral battle for Gujarat is vital for the BJP as it has suffered a string of losses to the main opposition Congress party in state elections in the past 18 months.
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is to campaign in the state next week, while Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is also expected.
Meanwhile an opinion poll released on Saturday said the Congress would win 95-100 seats in the state assembly, while the BJP would get 80-85 seats.
